What is Nigerian Pidgin?
So you probably are asking yourself what exactly is Nigerian Pidgin? Nigerian Pidgin is an English-based creole language that is used across Nigeria. Since it is based upon English, English speakers anywhere should actually be able to connect with this translation. The source of the grammar comes from different Nigerian languages, but most of the vocabulary came originally from English. The point is that the Bible in Nigerian Pidgin will make God’s Word easily accessible to a very large community across Nigeria and beyond.
About the Nigerian Pidgin Bible Project
A Short Introduction
The story of us
Tony Bojor is the main Translator and Mark Ogharaeurumi is the Translation Consultant and the primary administrator. Before the translation was finalized, Mark got cancer and completed the typesetting process while undergoing cancer treatments. Mark’s struggle with cancer has made the fund-raising process more difficult to manage.
The Nigerian Pidgin language is one of the four main languages of wider communication in Nigeria and its influence extends beyond Nigeria. As a Pidgin, however, there is no geographical area where it is the only language spoken. Rather, it is understood and used to communicate when people do not understand each other’s language. Because of Nigerian Pidgin’s ability to help many diverse people to understand each other, we believe that the Bible in Nigerian Pidgin will be especially beloved and well used.
The Bible is already available online. The whole Bible text and the audio New Testament can be accessed via this online link: https://scriptureearth.org/00i-Scripture_Index.php?sortby=lang&name=pcm&ISO_ROD_index=1010.
What is the project for?
This funding project is specifically to raise money to to print 15,000 copies of the Nigerian Pidgin Bible.
Why are we doing this project?
We believe that this Bible will be very strategic for the growth, nurture, and comfort of the Nigerian church. It was ready for printing in 2019, but it has been extremely difficult to raise funds for it in our standard ways. Many factors, including the economy, team ill health, and COVID-19 have contributed to the difficulties and that is why we are looking for new ways to fund this Bible.
For whom are the main people working on this project?
Tony Bojor - Translator, Mark Ogharareumi - Consultant --- They worked under the guidance of The Seed Company throughout the project. Heidi Rosendall – Publishing and Layout Specialist – She serves with SIL Nigeria, SIL International Global Publishing Services, and Wycliffe Bible Translators.
Who is our target audience?
We are reaching out to the worldwide church to seek assistance in providing the Nigerian Pidgin Bible to the large community of Nigerians who speak Nigerian Pidgin.
Who are our biggest supporters?
There is a Nigerian Pidgin Translation Committee that prays for and works with Mark and Tony.
